Calypso Hotel

Year: Planning StageLocation: Marsalforn, Gozo

The Calypso Hotel redevelopment forms part of a larger mixed-use coastal regeneration project in Marsalforn, designed by Pininfarina for BBT plc. Located prominently along the bay, the project is situated across three main sites, with the existing Calypso Hotel and neighbouring plots set for comprehensive transformation.

The new scheme reimagines the original hotel, blending hospitality, residential, and commercial uses within a layered architectural strategy that responds to Marsalforn’s historical and cultural context. The development includes 52 hotel rooms, approximately 132 residential apartments, food and beverage facilities and underground parking accommodating over 200 vehicles. The architectural design features variable-thickness limestone frames, double-height openings for the hotel zone, and single-height frames for the residences—creating a dialogue between openness and intimacy while referencing the local built fabric and natural elements.

The project emphasizes sustainability, wellness, and contextual integration. Public spaces, such as pedestrian-friendly terraces, stairways, and a rooftop landscapes, are woven into the scheme to strengthen community interaction and support a Mediterranean lifestyle. Materiality reflects a strong commitment to local craftsmanship, with extensive use of Maltese limestone, clay plaster, and natural finishes that root the project in its Gozitan setting.

This redevelopment is not just a hotel project but a repositioning of Marsalforn’s waterfront, aiming to become a modern hub for leisure, residence, and culture, while remaining sensitive to the village’s scale and traditions.
